The monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd.
James, Alan and (occasionally) Deborah are film nerds just like you - if you're the kind of film nerd who likes to chat about all things film and get lost down an 80s rabbit hole. We talk about the new films we've been watching lately, classic films we haven't seen yet and overlooked hidden gems you need to see, ask remakes to justify their existence or be wiped from history and offer parole hearings to bad films that need to be remade to fix their flaws. Sometimes we also do a Spotlight episode on a filmmaker or subject we're interested in.

The monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd is back with a bang and Double Reel Monthly, looking at news, new releases, new and notable films we've watched and the latest in our annual projects. We compare the competing comic book films Fantastic Four First Steps and Superman, plus new releases Naked Gun, Bring Her Back, War of the Worlds and Happy Gilmore 2. For our projects Alan ticks off another great Hitchcock film The Wrong Man, and James finally dusts off The Tree of Life which has been sitting on the shelf for years.

Friday Aug 15, 2025
Friday Aug 15, 2025
We finish up Issue 63 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd with a Spotlight episode. We're talking about the great Steven Spielberg, but focusing on two of his less-celebrated films which we both love. Duel was the film that broke him out of his TV job into his illustrious career as a film director, and A.I. is the project he inherited from Stanley Kubrick and which time has proven to be one of his best.
The other parts of this issue are already available to download - Double Reel Monthly, Classics and Hidden Gems and the Remakes Tribunal. Issue 64 will be with you from August 25th.

63.3 The Remakes Tribunal: Shaft (2000), U-571
Friday Aug 08, 2025
Friday Aug 08, 2025
Issue 63 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with the Remakes Tribunal where we put bad filmmaking on trial. First before the judges: 2000's reboot-slash-sequel to the Blaxploitation classic Shaft. Does it deserve to exist or should we wipe it from history? Then up for parole: should the notoriously inaccurate U-571 be remade as a film that tells the story of what really happened to the German U Boats and their Enigma codes?

Wednesday Jul 16, 2025
Issue 62 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd with a Spotlight episode. Here we take a closer look at John Boorman, but not at his best and most beloved films. No, we wanted to examine why, at the height of his 70s fame, he used his clout and creative freedom to make the two most disastrous films of his career. James is joined by regular Double Reel co host Alan Bayles to pick over the wreckage and see if there's anything worth defending.
