The monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. So are his co hosts: James Adamson, his imaginatively named son, and Alan Bayles, a sci fi author, fellow film nerd and fellow Sunderland fan. As well as a look at news, new releases and how we’re fitting in movie watching with our busy exciting lives, we look into classic films we haven't seen yet and overlooked hidden gems you need to see, ask remakes to justify their existence or be wiped from history and offer parole hearings to bad films that need to be remade to fix their flaws.

The Adamsons are back with another edition of the monthly podcast magazine for the discerning film nerd. We deliver the pod in three parts and this is the first, Double Reel Monthly. In the next hour and a bit we aim to set you up for the next four weeks of film watching with news, new releases, reviews of new films we've watched and more besides. As always our aim is to help you escape the confines of the Algorithm and watch something new or different. Coming up:
- A look at some recent news headlines and our pick of the new releases coming up this month;
- Reviews of any new and recent films we've watched;
- Penalty Shootout Film Quiz! James and James have to answer 5 testing quiz questions in turn, and whoever loses the shootout has to watch a film they will hate of the winner's choosing;
- The latest instalment in our Nic Cage project - a film from his canon picked at random
- The latest instalment in our David Cronenberg, looking at the, let's say "unusual" drama M. Butterfly
Part 2 the Features will be out next week and Part 3 the Big Conversation will follow the week after.

The third part of this month's edition of Double Reel, the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. This is our Big Conversation in which we tackle a topic from the film world in more detail, and since it's that time of year we're having a chat about the Oscars. We recap the latest ceremony, and how it compare's to last year's scandalous show, we talk about winners and losers and snubs, and we imagine what the future Oscars awards show would be like as a more multiplatform future beckons.

Saturday Mar 11, 2023
Saturday Mar 11, 2023
The Adamsons conclude episode 34 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd with the Big Conversation. This is where we get our teeth into a topic from the world of film in more detail and this month we look at who we think are the best filmmakers working today. All such lists are entirely subjective, and ours is made up of our favourite directors, with a natural bias towards those whose films we've seen the most. Our long list (in no particular order) consists of: Lynne Ramsay Guillermo Del Toro Jordan Peele Alfonso Cuaron Bong Joon-ho Park Chan-wook Alejandro Inarritu Ryan Coogler Ridley Scott Paul Thomas Anderson Denis Villeneuve Matt Reeves Quentin Tarantino Christopher Nolan Steve McQueen Kathryn Bigelow

Issue 34 of the monthly magazine podcast the discerning film nerd continues, with the second weekly drop of our top film content. This week it's our regular features including: Classics and Recommended: James (no the other one) finally gets round to watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri having been put off for years by a previous bad experience with this director's work; Hidden Gem: We remind people that Tony Scott and Denzel Washington did another collaboration, the lesser known but striking and unusual sci fi thriller Deja Vu; The One That Got Away: in which we discuss how Frank Miller's bonkers graphic novel Elektra: Assassin was nearly made into a film by Oliver Stone, based on a Jim McBride script; And the Remake Hatewatch: where we ask why the 1993 version of The Three Musketeers was made at all, and also express our wish for someone to do a remake of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen only better this time. The first part of this month's episode is out already, and our final part the Big Conversation will be released next week.

James and James review new films Babylon and The Pale Blue Eye, Oscar contender All Quiet on the Western Front and look back at recent hits Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
