The monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. So are his co hosts: James Adamson, his imaginatively named son, and Alan Bayles, a sci fi author, fellow film nerd and fellow Sunderland fan. As well as a look at news, new releases and how we’re fitting in movie watching with our busy exciting lives, we look into classic films we haven't seen yet and overlooked hidden gems you need to see, ask remakes to justify their existence or be wiped from history and offer parole hearings to bad films that need to be remade to fix their flaws.

38.3 The Big Conversation: The Golden Age of Animation (And Why It’s Over)
Sunday Jul 09, 2023
Sunday Jul 09, 2023
Episode 38 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd concludes with our Big Conversation. In keeping this this issue's theme of animated films we look at the Golden Age of Animation. This phrase used to be applied to the early Disney Classics from Snow White to the Jungle Book, but we're here to argue that the Golden Age of Animation started with the Little Mermaid in 1989 - or with Toy Story in 1995. James and James aren't 100% agreed on that. But they are agreed that the new golden age is over and will tell you why if you download and listen right now.The previous parts of this Episode, Double Reel Monthly and The Features, are already out now so please do go back and listen to them as well if you haven't done so already.

Episode 38 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with the regular Features and this month's animation theme. Our Classics and Recommended film is 1988's anime masterpiece Akira; the Hidden Gem is the Iron Giant which became a family favourite but was hardly seen on its theatrical release; the One That Got Away is the story of how A Princess Of Mars nearly became the first ever animated feature film; the Remake Hatewatch is of the execrable 1992 version of Tom and Jerry; and we also have a Remake Restoration where we suggest a film that needs a remake because it didn't work as well as it could have. Next week we bring you the Big Conversation about the Golden Age of Animated Films. The first part of this month's issue Double Reel Monthly is already available now.

The Adamsons are back with Issue 38 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. This part one of three, Double Reel Monthly, with news, a look at new releases, reviews of new films we've watched and the compelling and incredibly complicated Penalty Shootout Film Quiz. We also check in on our film resolutions for 2023, in which we each watch a selection of films as part of annual projects. For James (no the other one) it's Legal Age of Consent, where he watches a Nic Cage film picked at random. For James (no that one) it's The Cronenberg Institute, which this month features 2007's Eastern Promises. Part 2 the features will be released in a week's time, and a week after that we'll have the Big Conversation.

37.3 The Big Conversation: The Art of the Trilogy
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
Issue 37 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd concludes with the Big Conversation, where we tackle a topic from the film world in more detail. This month we discuss film trilogies, including what qualifies a film as a trilogy (is it still a trilogy if they make a fourth film?). We look at some of the best and worst examples and wonder if they're still a thing in the age of streaming prestige TV shows. The previous parts of this issue are out now, including Double Reel Monthly and the Features.

Issue 37 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd, and this week it's the Features, our regular discussions to enrich your film watching and help you escape the confines of the algorithm. Our Classics and Recommended feature is Drive, Nicholas Winding Refn's tribute to the characters of the 70s and styles of the 80s. Our Hidden Gem is the underrated and underseen Vietnam War film Casualties of War. In The One that Got Away we discuss how John Carpenter almost made the definitive western but in the end Tombstone was directed by someone else. Our Remake Hatewatch compares 2019's Midway to, you guessed it, 1976's Midway. And as a bonus we look at how a remake of Waterworld might actually be a good idea. Last week we dropped Double Reel monthly with news, reviews and a look at our annual film projects of David Cronenberg and Nic Cage classics. Next week we'll bring you the final part of the issue, the Big Conversation.
